GPS Navigation from Telenav goes beyond the regular turn-by-turn navigation exercise by allowing you to customize your experience and helping you on the go as you discover new features and locations around you.

Design

I like the design of this app for two reasons: First, the UI is pretty straightforward and great to look at. Secondly, it is quite intuitive, and navigation through the various dashboards is seamless. The maps look a bit rigid though as opposed to fluid. I give the UI a 4/5.

Highlights

With this app, you can access turn-by-turn voice navigation, with the ability to view street signs, speed warnings, and traffic information. You’ll also be able to use the downloadable OSM map format, which is great if you go off the grid or need to work with no bandwidth. The newest updates on the map include better rendering and also provide the ability to view speed cams and live traffic.

The multi routes feature allows you to view up to three route possibilities with estimated distances and wait times based on traffic conditions. The route planner is an important feature for cyclists, pedestrians and motorists alike as they can get to their destinations faster.

If you are traveling to a new location or city, Wiki travel guides are available to let you know more about your destination. You can add a favorites list and use a local search facility to find places near your coordinates. For your maps, you’ll have access to a single map with global coverage (not offline), one full country map for free, and you can also purchase additional map packs. In addition, you can choose the map display mode (for instance, night or outdoor).

The latest version offers new maps, bug fixes and a new widget for iOS 11. Based on my own experience and other reviews, I’ll give the features a 4/5.

Your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch will need at least iOS 7.0 or later to run this app. Your Android device will need OS version 4.0 an up. It will cost you $0.99 to purchase from the App Store while the Google Play Store app is free, and there are map kits which range from $2.99 to $10.99.

Convenience and Performance

Though it has similar features to other SatNavs, this app offers additional tools to customize your experience such as the NGx map technology, various map styles and modes, and Wiki travel guide. The NGx technology lets you do a whole lot with your maps, e.g., rotate and zoom, or click and interact with specific waypoints on the map. The route planner isn’t entirely accurate, and I was off a couple of times on ETAs and street names. The only bug I came across had to do with trying to conduct a local search which closed the app unexpectedly once or twice. I’ll give it a solid 4/5 for its convenience.

Pros

  • NGx for maps is interactive;
  • Downloadable and offline OSM formats supported;
  • Quite affordable;
  • Can synchronize with online maps on skobbler.com

Cons

  • Takes a toll on battery life;
  • Maps aren’t fluid;
  • Will miss a street or potential route occasionally;
  • No Android version

The Verdict

I rarely use this app standalone as I’ve found more accurate SatNavs even for OSM, but generally, this is still one of the leading navigation apps on iOS and Android while being inexpensive. I’d recommend it.
